This is not legal advice. Rules change, so confirm with the state agency before you fish.

Pennsylvania has a short stretch of Lake Erie shoreline, but the fishing there is some of the best in the state: yellow perch, walleye, smallmouth and largemouth bass, and in the open lake, brown trout, steelhead and lake trout. Presque Isle State Park, a curved peninsula at Erie, shelters a bay with piers, lagoons and boat landings that suit beginners as well as trolling anglers. This guide covers the Lake Erie permit, which catches many visitors out, the 2026 limits, where the park’s state-listed fishing spots are, and what we could and could not confirm. The steelhead creeks have their own guide: Erie steelhead tributaries.

The Lake Erie permit comes first

Fishing the waters of Lake Erie, Presque Isle Bay and their tributaries takes a Lake Erie permit, or the combination trout and Lake Erie permit, on top of the fishing license. The 2026 permit is $9.97 and the combination is $20.97. The permit covers waters that flow into the tributaries too. Two exceptions in the book: the East and West Basin (Waterworks) ponds at the park, and inland ponds, lakes and reservoirs in Erie County, are not covered by the requirement. Fees and the rest of the licensing picture are on our Pennsylvania rules guide.

Limits you should know

The rules snapshot above lists everything we verified from the 2026 Pennsylvania regulations book. The ones most visitors ask about:

  • Yellow perch: 30 a day. The Fish and Boat Commission sets the daily limit each year under an adaptive management plan and posts it at fishandboat.com, so check before you go. The book as printed shows a 7 inch minimum from December 1 to April 30 and none from May 1 to November 30.
  • Walleye: 15 inches, with a daily limit of 6 set the same way, open January 1 to March 14 and May 2 to December 31.
  • Largemouth and smallmouth bass: 15 inches and 4 combined in the open season. From April 11 to June 12 the book prints a different entry, 20 inches and 1 a day. Bass tournaments on the lake and the bay are unlawful from the second Saturday in April to the second Saturday in June.
  • Muskellunge: 40 inches, 1 a day. Northern pike: 24 inches, 2.
  • Trout and salmon: 5 a day combined from opening day to Labor Day, then 3 until the Friday before the next opener.
  • Smelt: open year-round with no minimum and no limit when taken by hook and line.

Lake Erie fish also carry a rule for moving them. Many species here are susceptible to VHS, a fish disease, so it is unlawful to move live fish, parts or eggs out of the Lake Erie watershed as bait unless certified VHS-negative. Taking dead fish home to eat is allowed.

Where to fish at Presque Isle

The state parks agency lists the shore access at Presque Isle: the Waterworks and the Ferry Dock, the East and West piers, the Perry Monument, the North Pier, the lagoons, and all the boat landings. Accessible fishing piers are at the Rotary Pavilion and the East, West and North piers. In winter, anglers fish through natural ice on Presque Isle Bay, Misery Bay and the Presque Isle Marina. The state parks agency lists perch, bass, walleye, trout and steelhead for the lake, and panfish, perch, bass, muskellunge, walleye, northern pike, crappies, smelt and steelhead for the bay.

Gull Point, at the east end of the peninsula, has been managed as a natural area to protect nesting birds, and the park has closed it for part of the year in the past. We read a 2017 statement of the dates but not a current one, so we do not publish them. Check with the park before you walk the east end. The story of the birds is in The Plovers That Came Back to Gull Point.

The open lake

Trolling is how most anglers reach the lake’s trout. The Pennsylvania state record brown trout, 20 pounds 9 ounces, was caught in August 2020 off Walnut Creek in an area locals call the Condos, in 74 feet of water, on a small spoon on a downrigger at 56 feet, with a nine foot rod and 14 pound line, according to the Fish and Boat Commission. A record does not predict what you will catch, but it shows what the lake can produce. Walnut Creek Marina, at the creek mouth, is the launch it came from.

Bay bass and pier perch

For bay bass, the one detailed source we have is a 2008 magazine piece, so we leave out its statistics. What holds up across seasons is general: smallmouth move into the bay in early spring and many leave by midsummer, largemouth hold around weed edges, and perch fishing from the piers is a cold-water standard with small jigs or minnows on light tackle. A medium spinning rod with six to eight pound line handles all of it. Because the park’s piers are accessible and the bay is sheltered, it is a good place to start.

Fish advisories

The 2026 DEP advisories treat Lake Erie fish seriously. In open water, walleye, coho salmon, steelhead, brown trout, smallmouth bass, white perch, white bass, whitefish, carp under 20 inches, freshwater drum, lake trout under 30 inches and channel catfish are one meal a month for PCBs. Carp over 20 inches and lake trout over 30 inches are Do Not Eat. Presque Isle Bay has its own list: smallmouth bass, white perch, freshwater drum, bowfin, carp, coho, steelhead and brown trout are one meal a month. Trout and salmon should be treated as Lake Erie fish wherever you catch them.

Gear that works

A medium spinning rod, seven feet or so, is the rod for pier perch, bay bass and panfish. For trolling in the open lake, a nine foot rod with a line-counter reel and a downrigger setup is the approach the record brown trout used. Tell us how you fish Erie, and we can build to it.
