Brandywine Creek State Park is in northern New Castle County, and its stocked stream makes a natural place to start with trout. For trout, the water to know is Wilson Run, a small stocked stream that flows through the park. This guide covers what DNREC says about Wilson Run, how to approach a small stocked creek, and what to keep in mind if you also want to try the larger Brandywine Creek for warmwater fish.

Wilson Run: the stocked trout water

DNREC lists Wilson Run as a designated stocked trout stream running from Route 72 through Brandywine Creek State Park. Because it is a designated trout stream, the state trout rules apply: a trout stamp during the spring and fall windows, the daily limit and the two-week closure before spring opening day. The summary above shows each rule with its source and the date we last checked it.

DNREC’s stocking updates for 2026 grouped Wilson Run with Beaver Run, Christina Creek, Red Clay Creek and White Clay Creek when it adjusted delivery dates. The practical lesson is that schedules shift. Check the DNREC trout page before you plan around a specific stocking date, and expect stocking days to draw a crowd.

Beaver Run, which flows from the Pennsylvania line to the Brandywine River, is also on the stocked list, and you can read about the other New Castle County streams in the Delaware trout roundup.

Brandywine Creek and warmwater fish

The larger Brandywine Creek is also fished for warmwater species such as smallmouth bass and panfish. Those fish have their own size and bag limits, which this guide does not cover. Check DNREC’s current rules before you keep any of them. If you are fishing for trout, remember that the trout stamp requirement applies on designated trout streams, not the whole park, so confirm which water you are standing beside.

Rules to know

The pre-season closure matters here as much as on any other trout stream. No fishing is allowed in any designated trout stream in the two weeks before spring opening day. Fishing hours run from half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after sunset, with a later start on youth opening day. The daily limit is six trout, and there is no minimum size. Dates for the 2027 season have not been announced. We will update this guide when DNREC publishes them.

A good place to start

Wilson Run is a gentle introduction for new anglers because it allows bait and lures, unlike the fly-only reaches on White Clay and Red Clay creeks. A simple outfit does the job. A light spinning rod around 6 to 7 feet, a small reel with 4 pound line, a small hook with a split shot, and a worm or dough bait fished near the bottom is a typical setup. Small spinners are another common choice. These are starting points, not requirements.

If you are bringing children, keep the first trips short and the goals modest. Stocked trout are an agreeable first fish, they are often willing to bite, and a state park setting makes it easier to take a break. Teach basic habits early: wet your hands before handling a fish you plan to release, keep it in the water as long as you can, and be careful with hooks.

A custom rod can suit a new angler too. A light, forgiving blank is easy to cast and gives a child or beginner a better feel for a small trout. If you tell us who the rod is for and where they will fish, we can build it to match.

Reading a small stocked stream

Freshly stocked trout tend to stay near their release point for a day or two, so busy access areas can be productive right after a delivery. Fish that have been in the water longer spread out to the places where the current brings them food without costing much energy: the head of a pool, a seam between fast and slow water, undercut banks and the shade of rocks and logs.

Cast across and slightly upstream and let the bait drift along the bottom. Watch the line for a tick or a pause and set the hook gently, because small trout are easy to lose to a hard hookset. If a spot has not produced in ten minutes, move. Walking quietly and keeping a low profile will help.

Seasons

Spring is the main season, with the stamp window starting on the first Saturday in April and running through June 30. A second window runs from the first Saturday in October through November 30. Trout are put-and-take fish in these streams, and summer water temperatures are hard on them, so spring and fall are the seasons to plan around.

Safety and etiquette

Stream rocks are slippery, and cold water in spring and fall can chill you quickly. Wear sturdy shoes or waders with good traction, and keep children close to the water’s edge only when an adult is with them. After a heavy rain, small creeks can rise and cloud over quickly, so check the weather before you go. Respect other anglers and stay on public land, because the land along many northern Delaware streams is private.

Eating the fish

DNREC’s consumption advisory lists non-tidal Brandywine River, from Baynard Boulevard to the state line, at 6 meals per year for all finfish, and the tidal river below Baynard Boulevard at 2. Stocked trout from designated trout streams are listed at 12 meals per year. Women who are or may become pregnant or breastfeeding and children should follow the state’s guidance. The rules snapshot above gives the exact wording and the date we checked it.
